Abstract

In India, about a half of pre-school children ore under-nourished. Undernutrition manifests as subnormal growth or growth retardation and is measured by levels of stunting, wasting and underweight. Therefore, measurement of growth, in spite of some practical limitations, is a convenient and useful tool in the hands of primary health care workers. Growth monitoring has been an integral part of nutrition surveillance and a number of public health intervention programs like the Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) and Tamil Nadu Integrated Nutrition Project (TINP) in India. Growth monitoring in early childhood is an important component of the ICDS program. These children are weighed every month using Salter weighing scale at the Anganwadi Centre (AWC) and the weights are plotted on growth charts.

Abstract

Adolescence is a period of rapid growth and stress. Little attention has been paid in our country to this segment of the population. Many students in universities and colleges live away from home in hostels. Several studies in this group have been carried out earlier confining themselves however to the profile of diet and nutrition in this group. All hostels do not provide the same standard food service and very little information is available on the organisational structure and physical facilities provided in these hostels.

Abstract

Protein Energy Malnutrition (PEM) is an important public health problem among infants and young children. Though poverty is recognised by far as the most important factor responsible for the widespread prevalence of this malady, faulty feeding habits arising out of ignorance often lead to inadequate intake of essential nutrients by this segment of the population.
